It is quite easy to summarise Nouvelle Vague which received a rousing reception at Cannes 2025, as just another cinematic love letter to Jean-Luc Goddard. But this is far bigger than a love letter.

Richard Linklater beautifully captures the period details of making À Bout de Souffle by Goddard. How Goddard broke the rules and established himself as a world cinema heavyweight is brought to life in a stylish way. In that film Jean Seberg and Jean Paul Belmondo were the star crossed lovers in Paris. In Nouvelle Vague we are taken back to the streets of 1950s Paris, getting us to reimagine the details in a dreamy manner.

Most people forget François Truffaut’s contribution to the making of À Bout de Souffle by writing the story. But Richard Linklater gives due credit to Truffaut. Nouvelle Vague is an emotional tribute and a stylish homage to the entire French New Wave.
